I think we all remember the days of worksheets. They seemed to never end and while they did help us to practice information, talking about mathematics specifically, we tended to lose interest in the subject with each and every page.
Homeschoolers are no different than traditional schoolers when it comes to worksheets. Kids want the ability to move around, to interact with their learner content, and to get away from a laundry list, or worksheet, of problems. So what can you the “teacher” do? Let the student(s) solve problems on your household walls!
Supplies:
- Post It Notes – Varying colors
- Worksheet
Wait, wait, wait. Come back and let me explain! You’ll want to grab two colors of post-it notes and that boring worksheet. I have literally copied every problem from a worksheet before and had 100% engagement just from putting the problems on purple post-it notes and the answers on yellow. Color choices have zero effect.
You simply need to display the post-it notes with the answers. To make it fun… I scattered math problems on a wall in our playroom, as shown below.
Then you hand the student the stack of post-its containing math equations, or special sounds, or the history facts or whatever it is your worksheet was about. The student will the stick a question on top of the correct answer. There is so much satisfaction for the student when their hands are free of questions, and they’ve successfully paired each one with an answer.
Drop a comment below and let me know how you used this cool gamified learning technique!
As always, please make learning fun!
